Gulf and Caribbean Region: Apalachicola Bay, Florida – SPI, Grab, and Single-Beam Acoustic Data Sets, 1999

Apalachicola Bay MapThis project was initiated by the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve to address its need for bay-wide benthic habitat maps as baseline data to evaluate the effects of future water allocation changes in the watershed.

Benthic grabs, sediment profile imagery (SPI), and RoxAnn™ single-beam acoustics data were taken concurrently to document the distribution and occurrence of benthic habitats, bottom types, and invertebrate communities in October 1999. Habitats identified in the data sets include oyster beds, biogenic sands, and seagrass beds. Grab data include sediment texture, sediment organic content, and benthic community parameters. Acoustic data provide bottom cover characterization, including sand, silt, and shell hash.

The Center's role in this project included funding and technical support for data collection and analysis.
