Gulf and Caribbean Region: Dry Tortugas, Florida Acoustic Data Set

Dry Tortugas, Florida Acoustic Data Set MapThis project was initiated by NOAA's National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science, Center for Coastal Fisheries and Habitat Research. The goals of the project were to collect baseline information on the physical environment, habitat components, and trophic pathways in the recently established Tortugas Ecological Reserve that would support subsequent evaluation of management practices implemented within the reserve and their effects on surrounding areas.

Between 2000 and 2002, the Center conducted single-beam acoustic survey transects at over 30 stations using the RoxAnn™ system. The focus of these surveys was the ecotone between the platform reef environment and surrounding soft bottom areas. The data resulting from this project will enable reserve managers to protect sensitive habitats and fishery resources through improved understanding of the benthic environment and its relationship with targeted species.

The Center's role in this project included single-beam acoustic surveying, field data collection, and analysis.
