Northeast Region: Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island SAV Data Set 1999

This project was initiated by the State of Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management Narragansett Bay Estuary Program as part of a critical resource inventory that serves as the basis for a bay-wide approach to resource protection and restoration.

The mapping effort covers the entire Narragansett Bay estuary and was conducted through the Narragansett Bay Estuary Program with primary photo-interpretation being accomplished by the University of Massachusetts' Natural Resources Assessment Group. In addition to SAV, this data set also includes oyster beds, emergent wetlands, and other coastal habitats. The SAV data have been used to plan eelgrass restoration efforts, and fish and vegetation species are being inventoried at all the SAV sites to provide a quantitative target for future restoration.

The Center's role in this project included technical and field assistance.
