Benthic Habitat Mapping
This project was initiated by the Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve to address the potential impacts of dredging in the Webhannet River and pollution in the York River on the benthic community. Benthic grabs and sediment profile imagery data were taken concurrently to map the benthic habitats in both rivers in September 2001. Grab data include sediment texture, sediment organic content, and benthic community parameters. Interpolated distribution grids are available to represent invertebrate community coverage for three major taxa groups and two major species in both rivers. The Center’s role in this project included funding and technical support for data collection and analysis.
