Land Cover Analysis

Kauai County

Kauai County contains the islands of Kauai and Niihau which are the northernmost populated islands in the Hawaiian Island chain. Niihau is a privately owned island with about 150 permanent residents and subsists on an agricultural economy. Kauai is home to about 58,000 residents (2000 Census). Both islands have extensive tracts of remote areas accessible only by helicopter. Remote sensing technology enables the classification of these islands’ varied and ecologically important landscapes.

Project Data

Description

High Resolution Impervious Surface data, circa 2005, was produced for Kauai County using 2.4 meter Quickbird satellite imagery. Land cover and land cover change data prior to 2005 were produced using 30 meter resolution Landsat Thematic Mapper and Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery.
