The NOAA Coastal Services Center is partnering with a number of academic and governmental organizations to better understand the unique and highly complex nature of weather and climate patterns within the coastal zone and to provide new and integrated climate data, research, and products to coastal resource managers for use in decision-making processes.

Focus of current partnerships:

  • Helping coastal managers better understand the global climate system and its uncertainties
  • Demonstrating the necessity of combining terrestrial, oceanographic, and atmospheric data and information into a single source for a more complete picture of weather and climate in the coastal region
  • Increasing the coverage and availability of weather and climate data, modeling, and products through the Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS)
  • Exploring methods to prepare for the regional and local impacts of climate variability and change

Future efforts:

  • Identification of additional needs and uses of climate information by coastal communities
  • Research to better understand sea level variability and change, and their impact on the coastal environment
  • Education and outreach for better application of new and existing climate data, tools, and information
  • Evaluation of previous climatological efforts for future program improvements
