Climate Products


A stakeholder workshop (PDF, 731KB) was conducted at the NOAA Coastal Services Center in 2003 to identify current and future uses of climate data and information and to facilitate the development of coastal climatologies. Two pilot coastal climatology projects were developed to demonstrate the importance of incorporating marine and terrestrial data into one user-friendly Web site to provide a more complete picture of the climate in coastal regions. Although the Web sites are regionally specific and target a certain sector of the coastal management community, they can be easily modified for other regions and additional sectors of the community.

Recreation and Tourism Industry

The Onslow Bay Coastal Climate Information Web site was designed to provide climate information pertinent to the recreation and tourism industry along the southern North Carolina coast. The pilot was based on input received during interviews with recreation and tourism managers and potential end users, as outlined in the project report (PDF, 2.23MB). This site was developed by the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and uses data from the Coastal Ocean Research and Monitoring Program (CORMP) which is an Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS) effort supported by NOAA.

Commercial and Recreational Fisheries

The Southeast Coastal Climate Web site was designed to provide climate information pertinent to the commercial and recreational fisheries of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and Alabama. This site was created by the Georgia State Climatology Office at the University of Georgia and Florida State University.

As additional climate uses or needs are identified, new coastal climatology products and applications may be developed. New methods will likely focus on human health and climate, the concept of climate resilient communities, and the effects of sea level variability and change on local communities.
