2003-2005 Project Summaries
American Samoa:
Virginia Farmer worked with the American Samoa Coastal Management
Program in Pago Pago to provide assistance in developing and implementing
the local action strategies for overfishing, unregulated development,
global climate change, and population pressure. Virginia supported
the implementation of Coral Reef Advisory Group initiatives in the areas
of education and outreach, coral reef monitoring, and nonpoint source
pollution. She also supported the Coral Reef Advisory Group's reporting
and planning activities.
Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands:
Qamar Schuyler worked with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana
Islands (CNMI) Coastal Resources Management Office in Saipan to develop
and implement a coral reef education and outreach program. She researched
existing education and outreach efforts to identify gaps. Finally, Qamar developed and distributed new education and outreach materials
to evaluate their effects.
Guam:
John Tomczuk worked with the Guam Coastal Management Program in Adelup to
coordinate and monitor the coral grants administered by the agency. John also worked with stakeholders to further develop and implement the Local Action
Strategies (LAS) developed for Guam, including recreational misuse and overuse, disease/coral
bleaching/climate change, land-based sources of pollution, fisheries management, and lack of
public awareness.
Hawaii:
Melissa Bos worked with the Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources
in Honolulu to assist in the coordination and implementation of local
action strategies relating to land-based pollutants and coral reef fisheries.
She also assisted in the initial development of a local action strategy
for recreational overuse.
Puerto Rico:
Mayra Suarez worked with the Puerto Rico Department of Natural
and Environmental Resources in San Juan to assist in finalizing a coral
reef management plan that addresses the coordination and implementation
of local action strategies relating to overfishing, lack of awareness,
recreational overuse and land-based sources of pollution. She coordinated
with local action strategy core committees to develop a coral reef management
plan and to assist in developing an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS)
for the proposed coral reef management plan. Finally, Mayra coordinated
meetings and preparing presentations to elicit public comments on the
proposed coral reef management plan.
U.S. Virgin Islands:
Susan Curtis worked with the U.S. Virgin Islands Coastal Zone Management
Program in St. Croix to develop and implement coral reef and nonpoint
source education and outreach programs for the East End Marine Park.
