Project Data: 2000 Southern Coastal California Land Cover/Land Use

Period

Map showing the extent of the 2000 Southern California land cover/land use data 2000

Description

Land cover/land use data were developed for the Southern California counties of San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara, and parts of Riverside and San Bernardino, using 30-meter Landsat satellite imagery. The data separates the area into 39 land types based on the standard Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) land cover categories. The standard C-CAP categories were expanded to identify certain land use types such as commercial and industrial, golf courses, and suburban residential. To arrive at the full 39 categories, additional processing was applied to the coastal California C-CAP land cover product.

To further process the coastal California C-CAP land cover product, ancillary boundary information and percent impervious data were introduced to the classification. Many of the categories in the Southern California data indicate that a land cover type is within the boundary of a local, state, or national park. Complete information about the data processing procedures can be found in the metadata file that accompanies the data when downloaded. An accuracy assessment was not conducted for this data; however, the coastal California C-CAP data from which it was derived had an 88 percent overall accuracy.
