Coastal Great Lakes Land Cover

This graphic is the extent of the available land cover datasets in the Great Lakes region.Formed by retreating glaciers over 14,000 years ago, the Great Lakes form a critical and valuable part of the U.S. coastal zone. The Great Lakes are a vital source of freshwater and provide diverse habitats for over 3,500 plant and animal species. Numerous economic activities such as agriculture, commercial fisheries, shipping, and tourism are dependent on this land and sea ecosystem.

For this project, the NOAA Coastal Services Center created land cover and change data for the Great Lakes region (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin) according to Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) standards. These data are the first coastal land cover information available region-wide for the Great Lakes since 1992.

Project Data

Period

All States: 1996 – 2001

Description

The land cover and land cover change analyses were conducted using Landsat Thematic Mapper and Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. All states were completed in fall 2002, except Michigan . Michigan was completed in fall 2003.

Products include land cover for 1996 and 2001 and a change product that compares the two dates.

As part of this project, data were also developed for a small area on the Canadian side of the Lake St. Clair watershed. To find information about this project and to download this data, visit the Lake St. Clair project data Web page.
