Northeast Land Cover

Map graphic of the northeast showing where land cover data was producedThe Northeast region contains both economically and ecologically diverse shorelines, such as Long Island Sound, Boston Harbor, and the Gulf of Maine. The region also contains over half a million acres of U.S. National Forests land, which includes Mount Washington, the highest mountain in northeastern North America, standing at 6,288-feet in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. These landscapes support a variety of habitats and thousands of species of plants and animals. All these environments contribute to the regional economy through tourism activities such as boating, fishing, skiing, and sight-seeing.

For this project, the NOAA Coastal Services Center created land cover and change data for the Northeast region, including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, northern Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia according to Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP) standards.
