Southeast Land Cover
The Southeast U.S., from Assateague Island National Seashore to Key West, includes thousands of miles of valuable coastline. The states of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida lay claim to sandy beaches, salt marshes, maritime forests, and coastal bays. These southern states offer a variety of recreational opportunities spanning a diverse geography. Florida alone has over 1,260 miles of coastline, more than any other state in the continental U.S. The unforgettable beauty of the southeastern coastline attracts visitors and residents who provide ever-increasing economic support to these states. At the same time, the attraction of many to the coast, results in natural resources being stressed by development and population growth.
