Creating Nautical Charts for Recreational Boaters

Several remote sensing technologies are being used to generate nautical charts that are designed especially for recreational boaters. The prototype charts of Florida coastal waters combine traditional chart information with aerial photography and imagery to provide points of reference that are recognizable to boaters who have varying levels of navigation skills.

Stabilizing a Fluctuating Shoreline

Aerial photographs and digital orthophotos are being used to inventory shoreline stabilization structures on Lake Michigan. This information will be used to assess the impact of these structures on erosion in these areas.

Identifying Channel Obstructions

Bathymetric LIDAR provided critical information about the bathymetry and elevation of East Pass, Florida after Hurricane Opal hit. The information was used to direct dredging operations that were needed for safe navigation through the narrow channel.
