Coastal Storms Program
Pacific IslandsThe Pacific Islands with their rich cultural heritage and natural resources are vulnerable to coastal storm and climate based hazards. The Coastal Storm Program will begin exploring solutions to challenges these isolated geographies and communities face when dealing with risk and disasters by examining the processes that create and maintain these risks and identifying both technological and socio-economic solutions to reduce their vulnerability. Geographic Scope of the ProjectSpecific locations where work will be conducted have not been determined at this time. Scoping and needs assessments will be conducted in the latter part of FY09, to prepare for funding available for work in FY10. Project Goals and ObjectivesThe Pacific Island project area is being initiated to promote improved weather observations/ predictions and the communication of this information to remote communities. CSP will assist these cultures with preparing for the seen and unseen hazards associated with distant storms, earthquake generated tsunami inundation, and sea level rise impacts. The needs in the Pacific Islands are far greater and more diverse than what the Coastal Storm Program can address. Therefore, the areas and the products ultimately will be selected according to the greatest priority needs and the corresponding capabilities of NOAA to meet those needs. Key PartnersPotential partners include federal, state and local/tribal governments, Pacific Services Center, Pacific Risk Management O’hana, Sea Grant extension, and NOAA IDEA Center. ProductsProducts developed for the Pacific Islands will include a suite of new and improved tools, data, information, forecast models, and training for the coastal communities in the project study area. In addition, the small grant program will also be transitioned from the Gulf of Mexico, providing funding directly to communities, universities, etc. through a request for proposals selection and distribution process.
